Start by looking at historical maps. Google "Cottage Grove Wisconsin Historical Maps" and you'll find several online. The Historic MapWorks sources won't let you print for free, but you can zoom in and see old place names and land owners. Historic plat maps will also give you section numbers, which will help you search Bureau of Land Management records.
There are three sources of land management records readily available:
- Federal Land Patents (U.S. Bureau of Land Management)
- Survey plats, dating back to 1810, are available for Wisconsin.
- Wisconsin Land Patents Database (by county) on Wisconsin genweb.
You might also search "historic Cottage Grove Wisconsin" and look for results that mention things like the National Registry of Historic Places.
